Irene hits Rutland

Sunday night our little state saw much devastation. Here in Rutland City we were asked to evacuate the area we live. I spent most of the night with Brad at the PD. I had a first hand view of the efforts and stress of the storm. Most nerving was the threat of a dam letting go. Luckily that was not the case.

Here is the aerial view of our neighborhood. I marked where I our house is just one block from 9 feet of water. Showing the playing fields and how the water was at the top of the soccer goals. Thank-goodness for the sunny days and the water receding. We have our power, little water in the basement.

Many many many of our roads are washed out around us. Route 7 north and south are shut down just outside the City limits. Route 4 East toward Killington is also closed. Route 4 west toward NY is our only open road.

"I love Vermont because of her hills and valleys, her scenery and invigorating climate, but most of all because of her indomitable people. They are a race of pioneers who have almost beggared themselves to serve others. If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the Union, and support of our institutions should languish, it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont."- Calvin Coolidge
